Why it works
The ship noses along the pack ice in the flat Arctic light, and then someone spots it: a polar bear, cream against the white, lifting its head to watch you pass. This is the high Arctic, one of the last places on earth to find them truly wild.
Worth knowing
The season is short, roughly late June through August, when the ice has loosened enough to sail but bears still hunt its edge, and the midnight sun means near round-the-clock daylight. Sightings are never guaranteed, since it is genuinely wild.
Trips depart from Longyearbyen, a long flight north via mainland Norway, so budget travel days and a night there. Bring binoculars and a long lens, because you view bears from the ship or Zodiacs, never up close on foot.
It is an expedition run on ice and weather, so the route flexes daily around what the pack allows. Layers and a windproof shell matter far more than a fancy wardrobe.
About the place
Svalbard sits about halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, a fragile Arctic wilderness of glaciers, walrus, and seabird cliffs, so the bears are one part of a much larger wild.
